“if daddy says no” Impacting Country Radio Now
Coming-Of-Age Original Lauded by Billboard, Country Swag, Country Now, and More
Curb Records artist Harper Grace shares a bare-bones demo of her debut country radio single with “if daddy says no (single version),” out today (3/13) — listen HERE. The raw, stripped-back rendering arrives just two weeks after the original recording released alongside a stunning music video that served as the culmination of an intentional creative rollout that teased a possible engagement. Fans can watch the gorgeous visual, which features Harper Grace’s dad and her fake fiancé, played by Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jackson Lancaster, HERE.
As the emerging songstress’ very first Country radio single, “if daddy says no” has already been praised by a variety of media outlets, including Billboard, which peeled back the layers of the vulnerable offering written and recorded in the wake of a real-life breakup. “I cried a couple times,” Harper Grace told Billboard’s Tom Roland during an interview detailing the creation of the song. “Cooper [Bascom, producer] knew the situation, and he was there in all of the emotions with me and kind of helping me vocally be able to get there. There were some cracks, and I had to pause for moments, and so this one was not a one-take pass.”
“if daddy says no” already has other critics buzzing as well:
“For Grace, this is only just the beginning of her career as a country music artist. She has true staying power, as her talent in songwriting and singing can match up to any artist in the industry right now.” — Country Swag
“As her soft-edged vocals float over the intimate and heavy narrative of a heart torn between love and approval, she leaves the story in that unresolved space, making it feel even more relatable.” — Country Now
“… ‘if daddy says no’ is streaming everywhere, and it’s a golden-hour confession wrapped in country grit and bridal lace… ‘if daddy says no’ marks a turning point. It’s vulnerable. It’s grown.” — Celeb Secrets
Harper Grace is forever her father’s daughter on “if daddy says no.” The Texas native finds herself caught between two men who hold her heart: the one who raised her and the one who pursued her. Contemplating the consequences of choosing one over the other, while acknowledging their similarities, she pleads for patience as she seeks her father’s blessing on a coming-of-age track rooted in real-life vulnerability, not storybook endings. Her vocal shines on the “single version,” conveying the depth of emotion she was experiencing at the time. Bathed in a golden hour glow, the warm, emotive ballad continues the country riser’s journey toward her highly anticipated full-length endeavor.
Harper Grace initially previewed “if daddy says no” while on tour with Josh Turner and has recently added it to her setlist while opening select dates for fellow “American Idol” alum Scotty McCreery. This comes on the heels of supporting Walker Hayes on his acoustic run last fall. Up next, the blossoming singer-songwriter is scheduled to make appearances at the international Buckle & Boots Festival in the U.K. and Switzerland in May.
