This Ultra Rare 21 Masters album by Jerry Naylor features special recordings from the Sidewalk Productions and Curb Records Archives

Most of the masters were recorded during the 1960s.

Jerry got his start in 1956 at age 16 as a member of the West Texas group the Cavaliers. After a stint in the Army, Jerry went on to international fame in the early 60s when he was chosen to be lead singer of the legendary Crickets during their years on Liberty Records.

After leaving the Crickets in late 1964 because of a temporary health issue, Jerry signed as a solo artist with Mike Curb’s Sidewalk Productions in 1965.

While at Sidewalk, many of Jerry’s recordings were released on Tower Records, a division of Capitol Records. During this period, Jerry’s record of City Lights (written by Harley Hatcher) became a classic piece in the European Northern Soul genre, known for its blue-eyed soul sound and popularity among Northern Soul DJs.

City Lights was discovered by Northern Soul in the late 70s and has since become a top tune for the rare soul brigade. According to the Northern Soul website, “The song’s lyrics and melody have left a lasting impact on the Northern Soul scene, making it a staple in the genre’s repertoire.”

Jerry recorded City Lights during the summer of 1965 at Goldstar Recording Studio in Hollywood, with Stan Ross engineering and backing by many of the famed studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew…with background vocals by Darlene Love & the Blossoms. Immediately after the session, Jerry was chosen to be a regular on the legendary rock music television show, Shindig.

One of the many highlights of this collection is Jerry’s classic rock sound on the song Everybody Has Their Day, which was arranged, produced and engineered by Harley Hatcher at Producer’s Workshop studio in Hollywood.

Ultra Rare 21 Masters includes seven recordings by Jerry Naylor that have never been released.

They are:

The original composition of The Young Marrieds was written by Harley Hatcher and performed by Jerry Naylor at Harley’s wedding in 1965.

Two Bonus tracks are Thoughtless (written by Mike Curb & Jerry Naylor), and You Meet The Nicest People On A Honda (written by Mike Curb). Thoughtless was recorded in 1964 at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis, New Mexico.

As a note of special interest, He Can Do No Wrong (now released for the first time) was recorded on the same session with City Lights. Also, two other songs were recorded on that session (and included on this album). They are: It’s Only Make Believe, and My Special Angel.

During the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Jerry charted twelve records on both the pop/rock and country music Billboard charts. Two of those songs are included in this collection. They are: a disco version of But For Love, and the country song Is This All There Is To A Honky Tonk.

Jerry Naylor was born March 6, 1939 in Chalk Mountain, Texas. He lived in Oregon at the time of his passing on December 5, 2019. Jerry was not only a great recording artist… he was also an outstanding high-energy performer.
